Due to flood waters moving down the James River officials have closed Highway 81 north of Yankton and when it will be re-opened is uncertain.
South Dakota Department of Transportation Engineer Rod Gall says beginning at the Highway 50 intersection at Yankton only local traffic will be allowed through with a complete closure of Highway 81 approximately ten miles north.
Due to fast moving water, attempting to cross flooded roadways is very dangerous and Gall says motorists can exit Yankton to the north on Highway 50 only.
How long the closure will last is uncertain and Gall says it is hoped Highway 81 will be shut down for only a few days.
Gall says portions of Highways 44, 18 and 46 have also been closed due to flood waters on the James River.
