School Bus Safety

The start of classes in the Yankton School District on Monday means the end of summer vacation for students as well as a time for increased awareness of motorists regarding the need for safety especially when approaching school buses with children either entering or exiting a bus.

Cameras have been mounted on school buses to monitor the action of  motorists as the they approach stopped school buses and Superintendent Wayne Kindle says those drivers risk legal consequences when they choose to ignore the bus stop signs.

In addition to cameras Kindle says new lights have been installed on the rear of school buses to help get the attention of drivers.

South Dakota state law says when coming from either direction, drivers must stop when they see red signal lights displayed on a school bus.
