Thunderstorms last night halted play involving two South Central League amateur baseball teams in state tournaments at separate locations.  The Class A tourney is being held in Brookings and the Yankton Tappers led Castlewood 6-2 in the sixth inning when the storm moved in.  That contest will be continued at 9:00 this morning   In the Class B state tournament in Mitchell, Menno has a 3-0 lead over Clear Lake after four innings and that game will resume at 1:00 this afternoon.  Tonight at 7:30 in Mitchell, the Freeman Black Sox take on Flandreau.

The Renner Royals stayed alive Friday in the Central Plains Region American Legion baseball tournament in Sioux Falls.  Renner edged Edina, Minnesota 6-5 yesterday in a loser’s bracket game at the regional tourney.  Renner plays again this afternoon, and the eventual winner of the region qualifies to compete in the national Legion championships next week in North Carolina.

University of South Dakota senior Matt Tolan has qualified for the U-S Amateur Golf Championship starting Sunday at Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina. Tolan shot a two-round total of 138 to place second among 82 golfers in a qualifying tournament in Wisconsin.

The South Dakota Amateur golf championships will continue today and tomorrow at the Brookings Country Club.  Will Grevlos of Sioux Falls has a one-shot lead in the men’s division after an opening round of 69 on Friday.  In the ladies state tournament, USD golfer Katie Bartlett of Pierre and Lani Porter of Aberdeen are tied for the lead after opening with rounds of 75 at Brookings.
