YSD Opt-Out Plans

With the setting Monday of a date for next month for a public hearing on the Yankton School District 2019-2020 budget, another issue is on the radar for school officials: seeking a property tax opt-out in the next year.

Superintendent Wayne Kindle says like many districts throughout South Dakota the Yankton School District has never recovered from budget cuts of over eight percent several years ago.

Planning for the opt-out will begin next fall and Kindle says the amount will not be as much as one of the failed opt-outs previously asked for.

In 2011 and 2012 the Yankton School District made two attempts at passing property tax cut opt-outs that were both defeated by wide margins.
