KYNT Local Sports for 5-15-19

Top-ranked Brandon Valley edged Yankton 4-3 in 11 innings last night in high school baseball.  Mount Marty recruit Caid Koletzky led the Bucks with three hits and two RBI’s and SDSU football recruit Michael Drotzmann pitched four shutout innings of one-hit ball.  Yankton finished the regular season with a 10 and 10 record and will await the pairings later today for Saturday’s Region Tournament.

Yankton junior Jaiden Boomsma won the 200 meter dash and placed second in the long jump Tuesday at the Last Chance Track Meet at O’Gorman.  Kelsey Oswald had a pair of runner-up finishes in the hurdles events, Madisyn Bietz was second in the 800, the Gazelles runner-up in the 1600 relay and Matthew Mors was second in the high jump.  The Gazelles and Bucks will compete in the State Track and Field Championship May 24th and 25th in Sioux Falls.

The seeds have been announced for the South Dakota Boys Tennis State Tournament this week in Sioux Falls.  Yankton singles players Gage Becker and Nick Gregoire are both seeded second in the state in their flights and they are seeded third together at number-three doubles.  Bucks senior Cole Sawatzke is a fourth-seed at number-four singles and every Yankton player is seeded 12th or better.  The Bucks finished the regular season with an 18 and 5 overall record and placed second in the ESD heading into the state meet starting Thursday morning

Former Mount Marty catcher Caden Skinner is now a professional baseball player after making the 22-man roster for the St. Paul Saints.  Skinner was a two-time All-Conference selection as a Lancer catcher in the G-PAC.  The Saints open their season in the American Association Thursday at home against the Milwaukee Milkmen, the Sioux Falls Canaries start play Thursday at the Cleburne Railroaders, and the Sioux City Explorers host the Lincoln Saltdogs tomorrow night.

The U-S-D softball squad faces Purdue University tomorrow at 10 a-m in the opening game of the National Softball Invitational Championship with all their region games in the double elimination tourney at the Iowa State ballpark.
