KYNT Local Sports for 3-9-19

The unbeaten Ethan Rustlers defeated the Freeman Flyers 44-27 last night in the Class B girls basketball semifinals.  Emily Miller scored 14 points to lead Freeman, which faces Corsica-Stickney at 6:00 this evening in the Class B third place game at the Huron Arena.  Ethan meets DeSmet in the championship game tonight.

The Osmond Tigers will play for the Nebraska Class D-2 boys basketball title against Johnson-Brock tonight in Lincoln.  In the semifinals last night, Osmond handed Riverside their first loss of the season with a 62-50 victory.  Osmond enters the championship game with a 27-1 record.

Ponca will not play for a third consecutive Class C-2 boys title, after Yutan edged the Indians 46-42 in Friday’s semifinals.  Ponca is 23-5 overall and will take on Centennial in a third place game this morning.

The University of South Dakota women’s basketball squad is the second seed in the Summit League post-season tournament and the Coyotes will take on North Dakota State today at 2:30 in the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.  The USD men’s basketball team is seeded sixth and will face Purdue-Fort Wayne tomorrow night at 8:30 in the opening round at the Premier Center.

USD junior Chris Nilsen took runner-up honors in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Alabama.  Nilsen had a vault of 18 feet, 9 inches for second place in the meet.  USD will have three competitors today in the national meet, including high jumper Zack Anderson, Helen Falda in the women’s pole vault and Lara Boman in the women’s hammer throw.

Mount Marty sophomore Jill Orwig tossed a no-hitter and the Lancer softball team shut out Bethel College 12-0 yesterday in Arizona.  Makenzi Howard hit for the cycle for Mount Marty with a homer, triple, double and single.  In the second game, seventh-ranked Indiana Wesleyan outscored the Lancers 9-5.

In college baseball on Friday in Tucson, Concordia blanked Mount Marty 7-0 in the first game and then the Lancers pounded the Bulldogs 19-5 as Mason Townsend of Yankton had four hits and five RBI’s for the Lancers.
