Ruven AfanadorSam Smith is good at theme songs: He won an Oscar for the James Bond theme “Writing’s on the Wall,” from the movie Spectre. Now, he’s written and recorded another theme tune…for a Netflix miniseries about rabbits.
Not just any rabbits, though: the rabbits of Watership Down, the classic Richard Adams novel about a group of brave rabbits who must find a new home after theirs is destroyed by humans. Netflix is creating an animated miniseries based on the much-loved book, and Variety reports that Sam will sing the theme.
The song is called “Fire on Fire,” and Sam co-wrote it with Steve Mac, the hitmaking songwriter/producer behind hits like Ed Sheeran‘s “Shape of You” and Pink‘s “What About Us.” Sam recorded it at London’s famed Abbey Road studios in September.
According to Variety, Sam said in a statement, “I am so excited and honored to be a part of this new adaptation of Watership Down. This story is so powerful and timeless, and it has been thrilling to work…on this song for it.”
A previous animated version of Watership Down was released in 1978. That version’s theme song, “Bright Eyes,” by Art Garfunkel, was a #1 hit in the U.K.
Watership Down will air in December. The voice cast includes James McAvoy, John Boyega, Olivia Colman, Ben Kingsley, Daniel Kaluuya, Taron Egerton and Peter Capaldi.
