The Yankton Tappers edged Brookings 3-2 last night in the opening round of the Class A amateur baseball tournament at the Renner ballpark. Luke Bauske fired five shutout innings for the Tappers, Mason Townsend had a homer and double and Sheldon Gant drove in two runs for the winners. The Tappers will play again this afternoon in the state tournament.
In the Class B amateur baseball state tourney at Sioux Falls, Garretson defeated Menno 8-2 as Derek Fischer allowed just two hits in the victory. Menno was the champion of the South Central League post-season tournament. Today in the Class B state tourney, Wynot faces Madison at 11 a-m followed by Lesterville against Plankinton. Tonight at 5:30, Crofton takes on top-rated Alexandria.
In the winners bracket last night at the Class A American Legion state tournament in Pierre, Rapid City Post 22 nipped Renner 4-3. In the elimination round on Friday, Mitchell beat Sioux Falls East 4-2 and Brandon Valley crushed Pierre 15-2.
In American Association baseball on Friday, Sioux Falls outscored Lincoln 8-6 which ended the Canaries eight-game losing streak. Sioux City edged Texas 3-2 as Jordan Taylor allowed just one run in seven innings pitching for the Explorers.
Halfway through the 45th annual Hillcrest Pro-Am Golf Invitational, Brady Calkins from Washington leads the pros with a 36-hole score of 13-under-par 131 which is three strokes ahead of Chris Gilman from California. In the Amateur division, Matthew Schaefer of Hartington fired a six-under-par 66 yesterday and his 148 total is tied with Gregory Rice. Brian Strahl of Yankton leads the Net Amateur division, while Yankton golfers Denny Fokken, Steve Slowey and Steve Weiland are in a three-way tie for first with scores of 161 in the Senior Division.
