Jail Staffing

Due to the steady increase in the number of prisoners being housed at the Yankton County Public Safety Center, the Yankton County Commission has approved adding two additional full-time staff to the facility.

Chairman Todd Woods says the alternative to hiring additional staff was to reduce the number of federal prisoners being housed at the jail which would result in a loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars of revenue annually.

Woods says jailers at the public safety center are often involved in duties beyond guarding prisoners.

Sheriff Jim Vlahakis says there are often as many as one hundred or more prisoners housed at the Yankton County Public Safety Center from federal authorities, neighboring counties and the local area.
