South Dakota State edged U-S-D 76-72 last night in Brookings and with the victory has claimed the Summit League regular season men’s basketball title. Mike Daum led the Jacks with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Matt Mooney led the Coyotes with a career-high 33 points. South Dakota State and South Dakota will be seeded one-two when the Summit League men’s basketball tournament begins next Saturday March 3rd in Sioux Falls.
The U-S-D softball team will play a pair of games today in Louisiana including the first game at 9 a.m. against Missouri State and a 3:00 contest with Louisiana Tech.
The Mount Marty College baseball team has moved their games in Kansas to a day later. The Lancers will be in Topeka taking on Presentation College in doubleheaders both Sunday and Monday afternoons.
Gayville-Volin senior Lanny Clark has agreed to run cross-country and track at Mount Marty College. Lanny Clark was a member of the Gayville-Volin squad that set a Howard Wood record in the 4 by 800 relay, and she has qualified for the state meets in both cross-country and track
Both classes of high school wrestling in South Dakota will hold their state tournaments the next two days at the Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls. The Yankton Bucks qualified six wrestlers for the Class A meet starting at 10 a.m.
The Region 5-B girls basketball tournament at Yankton High School was postponed last night and will be played tonight. Irene-Wakonda will take on Bridgewater-Emery at 6 p-m and Canistota faces Freeman at 7:30 at the Summit Activities Center. In the girls basketball Region 4-A tournament on Thursday, Vermillion defeated Dakota Valley 62-40 and Wagner ousted Parker 46-31.
Top-ranked Ponca defeated Hartington Cedar Catholic 63-53 last night to win the Class C-2 Sub-District 5 boys basketball tournament. Wynot topped Bloomfield 50-35 in the Class D-2 Sub-District 4 title game.
Hartington Cedar Catholic faces Ainsworth tonight at 7:00 in the Class C-2 girls basketball district final at the Boyd County High School gym.
