Catie LaffoonIn 2017, Julia Michaels went from being a behind-the-scenes writer of hits for the likes of Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber to an artist in her own right. Now, she’s a newly minted Grammy nominee with two nods: Best New Artist and Song of the Year, for “Issues.”
Julia, currently on tour in Australia with Shawn Mendes, tells Billboard she got the news in the middle of the night, when her manager surprised her in her bedroom and then jumped on top of her and began crying. Julia says she was shocked because, while she wanted a nomination, she was convinced it wasn’t going to happen.
“I just decided I was gonna wake up like it’s Christmas morning and I was either going to get the bike that I wanted or the pair of socks and I was just going to have to accept the outcome,” she tells Billboard. “I just couldn’t believe it…[I got]…the bike and the scooter.”
“I’ve been at the Grammys the last three years and just watching all these incredible artists pour their hearts out on those stages and just knowing that I may be one of those people — or I guess now I kind of am, which is crazy — it just feels… I have no words,” the singer gushed. “I absolutely have no words.”
Julia tells Billboard she’ll spend the next two months until January 28, the night of the Grammys, finding “the most kick-a** outfit I can possibly find,” and trying “not to think about it too much, which I know is impossible because this kind of thing will completely consume me.”
